# PTE rescore: fee, rules and when it's worth it

What a US$160 PTE rescore does, who can ask within 14 days, and a check of whether it's worth it for your scores.

## How a PTE rescore works

PTE is marked by machine, but a rescore is done by a human expert, who re-marks your whole test. It costs US$160 and you ask for it by phone. A technical review is a different service: it checks your session for audio problems and never changes your score.

| | Rescore | Technical review |
| --- | --- | --- |
| What it is | A human re-marks your whole test | A check of your recordings for technical problems; your score doesn't change |
| Fee | US$160 | US$50 |
| How to ask | Phone Pearson customer support within 14 calendar days of your results | Phone Pearson within 15 business days of your results |
| Refund | The fee comes back if your overall or any skill score changes. The test fee doesn't | If a problem is found, your test fee and the review fee come back |
| Result | Your score can go up or down. A new score replaces the old one at once, and your report is reissued | Within 15 business days of payment |

## Who can ask for a rescore

- You ask within 14 calendar days of your score being released.
- It's your most recent PTE test, and you haven't asked for a rescore of it before: one per test.
- You haven't booked another test. Once you have, Pearson won't take the request.

## When a rescore is worth it

Pearson says that in most cases scores stay the same, and that they can go up or down. It doesn't publish how often they change. So treat a rescore as a long shot, and only take it when all of these are true:

- You're short of your target by 2 points or fewer in each skill you missed. This line is Testmigo's guidance, not Pearson's: the further you are, the less a re-mark is likely to find.
- You can live with a lower score. If your current scores already open some doors, a rescore puts them at risk.
- You haven't sent the score yet. A changed score replaces the old one, and you have to tell anyone you sent it to.

Use the check above with your four scores. It applies Pearson's rules first, then the 2-point line.

## Rescore or retake: what each costs

A rescore costs US$160 wherever you tested, refunded only if a score changes. A retake costs the full test fee again, and it gives you a fresh attempt rather than a second opinion on the old one.

You can book a retake as soon as your results are out, up to 12 times in 12 months. For every country, see [PTE exam fees](/pte/fees).

## What your skills profile tells you

Under your score report, View Skills Profile shows how you did on groups of task types, with Pearson's recommendations. Only you can see it, and it doesn't change your scores. Use it to pick what to practise, whichever way you go. The [scoring guide](/pte/scoring-guide) shows which tasks feed each score.

## PTE rescore questions

### How much does a PTE rescore cost?

US$160, paid by phone to Pearson customer support. It's refunded if your overall score or any skill score changes. Your test fee isn't refunded either way.

### How long do I have to ask for a PTE rescore?

14 calendar days from when your score is released. After that, or once you've booked another test, you can't ask.

### Can a PTE rescore lower my score?

Yes. Pearson says scores can go up or down, though in most cases they stay the same. A new score replaces the old one, and the old report is no longer available.

### What if I've already sent my score to a university or visa office?

If the rescore changes it, you have to tell them. They can only check your score through Pearson's system, which shows the new one.

### What's the difference between a rescore and a technical review?

A rescore (US$160) re-marks your whole test and can change your score. A technical review (US$50) only checks your recordings for technical problems; it never changes your score, but if it finds one, your test fee is refunded.

### How long does a PTE rescore take?

Pearson's policy doesn't give a time for a rescore. A technical review result comes within 15 business days of payment.
