# PTE Summarize Spoken Text: the 50-70 word rule, scoring and examples

PTE Summarize Spoken Text plays a 60-90 second recording and asks for a 50-70 word written summary. Outside 40-100 words, form scores zero.

## The short answer

Summarize Spoken Text plays a recording of 60 to 90 seconds and asks you to write a summary of 50 to 70 words. There is one in a test, scored for both Listening and Writing. Form is scored on length: 50 to 70 words scores 2, 40 to 49 or 71 to 100 words scores 1, and anything outside 40 to 100 words scores 0. Content, grammar, vocabulary and spelling are scored too, and the content score includes a human expert review.

## Key facts

- **Items per test:** 1
- **Prompt length:** 60-90 seconds

| Words | Form points |

*Form points by word count, from Pearson's July 2025 Score Guide. Aim for 60 words and a miscount cannot hurt you.*

Timings and scoring rules come from Pearson's task pages and the July 2025 Score Guide, checked 28 September 2026.

## How it's scored

The length bands are unusually forgiving compared with Summarize Written Text: you keep a form point anywhere between 40 and 100 words, and only lose it all outside that. Aim for 60 words and a miscount cannot hurt you.

Content rewards a summary that paraphrases rather than transcribes. The top band describes a summary where the main ideas are identified and synthesized and extraneous detail is removed, which is the opposite of writing down every phrase you caught.

> Unlike Summarize Written Text, this task does not require one sentence. Two or three sentences are fine, and usually read better.

## Summarize Spoken Text examples

Worked examples written for this page. Answer each one before you open the model response: memorizing a response is scored as an irrelevant answer in the real test.

**Example 1 -- a 58-word summary**

Recording (played once), transcript:

> Long-term records from ringing stations show that several common bird species are nesting earlier than they did thirty years ago, in some cases by more than a week. The mechanism is not the warmth itself. Warmer springs bring insects out earlier, and the birds that time their broods to that peak raise more chicks. Species that can shift are doing so. The ones that cannot, because they migrate on day length rather than temperature, arrive to find the peak already past. That mismatch, rather than any change in the number of insects, is what the long-term declines in those species appear to track.

Prompt: Listen once, then write a summary of 50 to 70 words.

Write 50 to 70 words.

Model response: "The lecture explains that several bird species now nest earlier than they did thirty years ago. The speaker links this to warmer springs, which bring insects out sooner, so birds that breed earlier feed their chicks at the insect peak. Species that migrate on day length cannot shift, and the resulting mismatch appears to drive their long-term decline."

Why it scores: Topic, cause, consequence and a qualification, in 58 words. It paraphrases rather than quoting, which is what the higher content bands reward.

**Example 2 -- trimming to length**

Prompt: You wrote 96 words on the recording above. Type it again at 50 to 70 and watch the counter.

Write 50 to 70 words.

Model response: Cut examples and repeated detail first, keeping the causal chain: warmer springs, earlier insects, nesting shift, and the species that cannot follow it.

Why it scores: 96 words still scores 1 for form, but the extra detail rarely adds content points. The bands reward removing extraneous detail.

**Example 3 -- what scores zero for form**

Prompt: You only caught the opening and wrote 35 words. Type 35 words, then add until the counter says you are in range.

Write 50 to 70 words.

Model response: Expand with what the speaker concluded, even in general terms, to clear 40 words and then reach the 50 to 70 band.

Why it scores: Under 40 words scores 0 for form regardless of accuracy. Reaching the band is worth more than being brief.

## Common mistakes

| What costs marks | Do this instead |
| --- | --- |
| Transcribing phrases as you hear them. | Note ideas, then write from the notes. Transcription loses the content marks for synthesis. |
| Writing over 100 words to be safe. | Over 100 scores 0 for form. Sixty words is the comfortable target. |
| Spending the whole time listening without writing. | Note the topic, two supporting points and the conclusion while it plays. |
| Ignoring spelling. | Spelling is one of the scored traits here. Use words you can spell. |

3. Count words on your first ten practice answers, then trust your calibration.
4. Check each summary for one clear topic sentence before the supporting detail.
