# PTE Write Essay: word count rules, scoring and examples

PTE Write Essay gives you 20 minutes for a 200-300 word essay. Outside 120-380 words form scores 0, and content, structure and language range all get a human expert review.

## The short answer

Write Essay gives you a prompt of two or three sentences and 20 minutes to write 200 to 300 words. There is one essay in a test, scored for Writing. The word count is scored directly: 200 to 300 words scores 2 for form, 120 to 199 or 301 to 380 scores 1, and anything under 120 or over 380 scores 0. An essay that scores 0 for form or content gets no points at all.

## How it's scored

Form is the mechanical check: 2 points for 200-300 words, 1 point for 120-199 or 301-380, and 0 for under 120 or over 380. An essay written in capital letters, with no punctuation, or made of bullet points and very short sentences also scores 0 for form.

Content scores 0 if the essay is on a different topic from the prompt, or if it leans on significant amounts of pre-prepared or memorized material. Because a 0 on content or form means no points for the whole task, these two are worth checking before you polish anything else.

Write Essay carries the most human review of any task: the expert review covers content, development, structure and coherence, and general linguistic range, not just content.

> Aim for about 250 words. It sits in the middle of the form band, which means a miscount at the end costs you nothing.

## Write Essay examples

Worked examples written for this page. Answer each one before you open the model response: memorizing a response is scored as an irrelevant answer in the real test.

**Example 1 -- a prompt and a usable plan**

> Some people believe university education should be free for everyone. Others argue that students should pay for it themselves. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Prompt: Plan the essay before you write it. The box below counts words as you type.

Write 200 to 300 words.

Model response: Four paragraphs: introduction that states both views and your position; one paragraph for free education (access, social mobility); one for paying (cost, quality, who benefits); a conclusion that restates your position with the strongest reason.

Why it scores: It answers the exact instruction, discuss both views and give your opinion. An essay that argues only one side loses content marks no matter how well written it is.

**Example 2 -- an opening paragraph**

Prompt: Write the introduction for the prompt above: both views, then your position.

Write 40 to 60 words.

Model response: "Whether university tuition should be publicly funded divides opinion. Supporters argue that free access widens participation, while opponents say the cost falls unfairly on taxpayers who never attend. In my view, a means-tested system answers both concerns better than either extreme."

Why it scores: Three sentences, about 45 words, and the position is already clear. Structure and coherence are scored, so stating the position early makes the rest of the essay easier to follow.

**Example 3 -- what costs marks**

Prompt: A prepared essay on education adapted with a few words from the prompt, or an essay of 95 words. Type 95 words and watch what the counter says about form.

Write 200 to 300 words.

Model response: Neither scores. Memorized content is scored as an irrelevant response, and 95 words is below the form floor.

Why it scores: Memorized material counts as an irrelevant response and scores 0 for content; 95 words scores 0 for form. Either one means no points for the task.

## Common mistakes

| What costs marks | Do this instead |
| --- | --- |
| Writing far over the limit to show range. | Over 380 words scores 0 for form. Over 300 already drops you a point. |
| Answering the topic rather than the instruction. | Underline the instruction: discuss both views, agree or disagree, advantages and disadvantages. Each demands a different shape. |
| Reusing a memorized essay body. | Prepare structures, not sentences. Pre-prepared content is treated as irrelevant and scores 0. |
| Leaving no time to check. | Plan 2 minutes, write 15, check 3. The check is for word count, paragraph breaks and obvious grammar slips. |

## How to practice

1. Write to a 20-minute timer from the start. Untimed essays teach the wrong pacing.
2. Learn one four-paragraph structure well enough to deploy it on any instruction.
3. Count the words of three practice essays by hand, then stop counting: you will have calibrated what 250 words looks like.
4. Check the last three essays you wrote for the same repeated grammar error, and drill that one thing.

## Common questions

### How many words should a PTE essay be?

200 to 300 words scores the full 2 points for form. 120-199 or 301-380 scores 1, and under 120 or over 380 scores 0.

### How long do you get for the PTE essay?

20 minutes, for one essay.

### Can I use a memorized PTE essay template?

Structures are fine; memorized content is not. Pearson treats significant pre-prepared or memorized material as an irrelevant response, which scores 0 for content.

### Is the PTE essay marked by a person?

It is AI-scored with a human expert review of content, development, structure and coherence, and general linguistic range.
