# PTE Describe Image template

Use a frame, not a script. A memorised description that doesn't match the image scores 0 for content, and then nothing else on the item counts. The frame below gives you the order; the image gives you the words.

## The frame

### 1. Say what it is

Name the image type and its topic in one sentence.

- This bar chart compares...
- The line graph shows how ... changed between ... and ...
- This diagram explains how...

### 2. Give the main pattern

The highest, the lowest or the overall trend: the shape, not every number.

- The most noticeable feature is...
- Overall, ... rose steadily while ... fell.
- By far the largest share belongs to...

### 3. Add two details

Two specific figures or stages that support the pattern.

- For example, ... reached about ... in ...
- In contrast, ... stayed at roughly ...
- The next stage is ..., followed by ...

### 4. Compare or connect

Link two parts of the image: this is what the top content band rewards.

- This is almost twice as high as...
- Unlike ..., ... grew throughout the period.
- This suggests that...

### 5. Close

One sentence on what the image shows overall.

- In summary, the chart shows that...
- Taken together, the data suggests...
- Overall, the main point is that...

## What costs marks

- A long fixed opening that would fit any image: content can be scored 0.
- Reading every number aloud instead of giving the pattern.
- Stopping at 20 seconds: plan the comparison and the close.

## Worked example

**Say what it is:** This bar chart compares the percentage of Australian men and women fully engaged in work or study in 2019, by age group.

**Give the main pattern:** The most noticeable feature is that women's engagement falls steadily with age, while men's stays high until fifty.

**Add two details:** For example, women drop from about 86 percent as teenagers to 42 percent over fifty. In contrast, men peak at roughly 90 percent in their thirties.

**Compare or connect:** Teenagers are the only group where women are ahead, and by the forties men lead by about 35 points.

**Close:** Overall, the chart shows that the gender gap widens sharply with age.

## Questions

**Are Describe Image templates penalised?**

Memorised material that doesn't describe the image on screen is scored as irrelevant, which is 0 for content. A frame that only fixes the order of your sentences is fine, because every sentence still describes this image.

**How long should my answer be?**

Aim to speak for 35 to 40 seconds. That's about five sentences: what it is, the pattern, two details and a close.
