# PTE Summarize Written Text template

One sentence, 5 to 75 words, in your own words. Breaking the one-sentence rule scores 0 for form, and that's checked first. The frame joins the passage's main idea and its main qualification with one connector.

10 minutes, one sentence of 5-75 words

## The frame

### 1. Main idea

What the passage mainly argues or explains, reworded.

- The passage explains that...
- The writer argues that...
- Although many believe..., the text shows that...

### 2. Connector

One link that keeps it a single sentence.

- ..., while...
- ..., because...
- ..., which means that...

### 3. Main qualification or result

The key reason, contrast or consequence, then one full stop.

- ..., although this depends on....
- ..., so ... must....
- ..., but only when....

## What costs marks

- Two sentences: count the full stops; there must be exactly one, at the end.
- Phrases copied straight from the passage: content bands mark them down.
- Going past 75 words to include everything.

## Worked example

**Main idea:** Researchers have developed perovskite solar cells that address the limitations of traditional silicon photovoltaic technology by absorbing a wider spectrum of light wavelengths, being manufacturable at lower cost, and offering the flexibility to integrate into wearable devices, buildings, and portable electronics,

**Connector:** thereby

**Main qualification or result:** making solar energy more efficient, affordable, and accessible than previously possible.

## Questions

**Can I use a semicolon to join two ideas?**

Keep it simple: one sentence joined with a connector such as "while", "because" or "which means" is safer than semicolons.

**How long should the sentence be?**

Around 30 to 50 words is comfortable. The limit is 75.
