## Common questions

### Why is my first year's take-home higher?

Resident tax is charged on the previous year's income in Japan. In your first year there is none, so it starts from June of the following year.

### Is this exactly what my payslip will show?

No. It's an estimate for a single employee with no dependants, using FY2026 rates. Employers use insurance grade tables and the official withholding tables, and year-end adjustment settles your final tax. Expect a small difference.

### Which rates does the calculator use?

FY2026 rates, checked 25 September 2026. Kyokai Kenpo health insurance by prefecture (Tokyo 9.85%, Osaka 10.13%, Aichi 9.93%, Fukuoka 10.11%), split with your employer, plus the pension, employment insurance, income tax and resident tax rates in the table above. The table of common salaries uses Tokyo's rate for a single employee under 40.

### Does this include bonuses or overtime?

No. Enter your regular monthly salary. Overtime and bonuses add pay and deductions.
