# Japanese number converter

Numbers to kanji numerals and their readings, and back.

## Numbers with sound changes

Some hundreds and thousands change their sound. These are the ones learners most often get wrong.

| Number | Kanji | Reading |
| --- | --- | --- |
| 300 | 三百 | さんびゃく |
| 600 | 六百 | ろっぴゃく |
| 800 | 八百 | はっぴゃく |
| 3,000 | 三千 | さんぜん |
| 8,000 | 八千 | はっせん |
| 10,000,000 | 千万 | いっせんまん |

*Readings learners miss*

## Big numbers: 万 and 億

Japanese groups big numbers in fours, not threes: 万 is 10,000 and 億 is 100,000,000. So 1,000,000 is 百万 (a hundred 万), and prices like JPY 35,000,000 read as 三千五百万円.

| Number | Kanji | Reading |
| --- | --- | --- |
| 10,000 | 一万 | いちまん |
| 100,000 | 十万 | じゅうまん |
| 1,000,000 | 百万 | ひゃくまん |
| 100,000,000 | 一億 | いちおく |

*One 万 to one 億*

### Is 1,000 せん or いっせん?

On its own it's せん. Before 万 or 億 it becomes いっせん: 一千万 is いっせんまん.
